Exams Are Over –> What’s Next? (Sales Pitch Assignment Due: Friday March 8th)

The second term is almost over!

Reminder: The three book reviews are due tomorrow! (March 1st) Don’t forget to email me that names of the three novels you reviewed.

Next week we are going to be practicing our oral communication skills. Students are being asked to create a 60 second sales pitch presentation. Students will choose a book that they have recently read and attempt to convince their classmates to read this novel. Let’s see who can be the most persuasive. This assignment is due Friday, March 8th. Students will be given ample time in class to prepare and practice for their pitch!

Grade 6: Creative Writing Assignment

Students will be asked to respond to ONE of the following prompts.

A. How will daily life be different 50 years from now?

B. What does it mean to be a good citizen of a community? 

C. If you had to give up one of your five senses, which would you choose to go without and why?

 

Students will have the opportunity to get their creative juices flowing, while practicing paragraph writing skills.

Your writing piece must include:

  • Minimum of two paragraphs
  • Use the P.E.E. Method
    • Each paragraph needs a topic sentence (point)
    • Supporting details/evidence
    • Explanation of that evidence

Grade 6 Explores #BellLetsTalk

Today our Grade 6 class discussed Bell’s Mental Health Awareness Initiative. We spent time in class sharing thoughts and experiences regarding mental health and the importance of supporting one another. We strive to create a community in which we can all share our struggles and hardships without judgement. Please continue the conversation #OJCSLetsTalk

This week our class participated in an in-text citation workshop with Brigitte in the library. Below you will find the citation document that was created as an educational tool. The celebrity citation two paragraphs are due on Friday. The purpose of this assignment is to practice paraphrasing information and using in-text citations.

Your Task:

  • Write anywhere from two paragraphs to a full page that quickly sums up the life and work of the famous person of your choosing.
    • DO NOT JUST COPY AND PASTE! (Needs to be written in your own words)

Use three websites to get your information (not Wikipedia) and use several examples of in-text citation in your work.

Reading Challenge: Writing Reviews due Friday (Due March 1, 2019)

Book Review Assignment: As a part of the reading challenge, students will be required to READ and WRITE a minimum of three novel reviews using the library catalog.

Note: Reviews can only be written about books that we have in the library.

Students will earn 10 points for each review. Due March 1st, 2019

The link/login instructions for the library catalog can be found below. Students will email the names of the three titles to m.washerstein@theojcs.ca after all of the reviews are complete.

Today the Grade 6 class participated in a Kindness Workshop. Students read, discussed, and participated in a variety of activities regarding kindness and community building. This session focused on making the right choices. Students brainstormed various ways they could create an even kinder community in our school. Mrs. Bertrend and Shannon planned a meaningful afternoon! Take a look at some of the team building activities.

 

Grade 6: Egghead Reflection Editing

This week in class we are working on editing our Egghead Reflections. Students have been asked to read their short stories aloud in a private setting. We are focusing on improving: punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and sentence structure. Students are encouraged to use their editing checklist for all writing pieces.

Later on this week, students will be exchanging their short story drafts with their peers. We have discussed the importance of peer editing/providing constructive feedback.
